a series of urban interventions

a 2500m2 leftover space in the middle of the city, framed by railway tracks and roads, marked by what surrounds it, such as the facades of hotels, offices, the main railway station, seemingly without function. overgrown with grasses, flowers and thistles, the square will become the venue for HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland.

from the end of august, claudia bosse declares the place an urban laboratory and will gradually transform it. with visual, performative and acoustic interventions, mostly at dusk, this place will be temporarily activated: on 31 august at dawn, the composer günther auer will acoustically survey it with a concert. from the beginning of september, claudia bosse and participants of the public performance school PPS will performatively conquer the terrain over 10 days. on 3 evenings, performative interventions will be created from this, which will be presented at dusk on 5, 8 and 10 september. on 8 and 10 september, the performative interventions of HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland will be set to the sounds of musician katharina ernst and her drum set.

the series haunted landscape/s centres on endangered landscapes and their myths, narratives and experiences. it is about our planet, how we understand it and live with it. it is about enormous transformations of environments and their global effects. it is about wounded or poisoned landscapes, their healing, about the traces of the ghosts and monsters that inhabit them and their influence on the surrounding communities of human and non-human actors.

following HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland, further interventions by the urban laboratory on haunted landscape/s will take place on the area between karl-popper-straße and alfred-adler-straße in the 10th district until september 2025.

first act
the space has been declared an urban lab
the unseen wasteland is declared an urban laboratory in a ceremonial act and thus becomes the venue for visual, performative and acoustic interventions that will continuously overwrite the landscape. the series of urban interventions begins with the occupation of the unnoticed remaining area behind the main railway station between karl-popper-straße and alfred-adler-straße.

second act
mapping the space
the 2500m2 are framed by the city's infrastructure turning away. trams, fire engines, passers-by circle the site, which is being surveyed and mapped into sections. a rope divides the terrain into six sections for the purpose of mapping the rubbish.

third act
taking care of the space
between grasshoppers, gravel and plants, which are habitats for over 100 species, the carelessly discarded rubbish gradually grows together with the landscape. it is part of the layers of this place, part of haunted landscape/s. this intervention over several hours frees the unseen wasteland from seen waste.

benches to linger with the stone bumblebees, butterflies and blue butterflies and to the sound of the passing tram

a plateau with a panoramic view of the wasteland, canyons of houses and the sky

the wind that keeps blowing in scraps of paper and rubbish

discovery and description of the inhabitants of the wasteland, who communicate with passers-by via signs

a production by theatercombinat. funded by KÖR kunst im öffentlichen raum wien and stadt wien as part of theatercombinat's 2022-2025 concept funding programme by stadt wien kultur. with support of the public performance school PPS and ÖBB. the 4-year public performance school PPS by theatercombinat (2022-2025) will take place in 2024 in collaboration with belvedere 21.

PROJECTS of haunted landscape/s:
haunted landscape/s is a multi-format series by claudia bosse (2024/2025) in collaboration with various artists with/about/through wounded landscapes.

in HAUNTED LANDSCAPES or the breathing out of earth claudia bosse occupies the stage of tanzquartier wien at the end of october 2024 as a walk-in, performative environment, together with different materials, 5 performers and the sounds of günther auer. in HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland, a central residual area becomes an urban laboratory and venue for a series of visual, musical and performative interventions by claudia bosse with public performance school PPS and invited artists. in the field research project haunted landscape/s - about inner and outer landscapes as part of impulstanz, claudia bosse and the participating dancers explored relationships to landscapes, organisms and movements on unstable ground. claudia bosse's installation entanglement with a haunted forest interwoven with the forest opened mahler forum 2024 in june 2024 with a musical commentary by günther auer. between the built, the grown, the present and the past, the installation in the forest is freely accessible until the end of october. haunted landscape/s was developed as a site-specific performance with 3 dancers and 2 movement choirs in may 2024 for a derelict building site and ultimately ended in a multimedia installation. in october 2023, claudia bosse developed LANDSCAPE/S as part of the project celebrating trouble. choreographic convention in timișoara (romania) - a lecture performance as an installative spread that became a performative landscape.

the haunted landscape/s series was created as part of the 2022-2025 concept funding programme by stadt wien kultur, the federal ministry of arts and culture, public service and sport, with the support of the district of donaustadt, mahler forum 2024, KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien and in cooperation with belvedere 21, impulstanz, jugend am werk, wien 3420 and ÖBB.

the cycle ORGAN/ismus - poetics of relations combines modules, motives and methods for the realization of different artistic formats and at the same time wants to build or expand structures. because we can only realize those works for which we are able to find or invent structures.
